France pension contributions: distinguish record corrections, quarter buybacks and voluntary cover
For a French private-sector employee, retirement normally combines a basic pension record with mandatory supplementary pension rights. A missing career entry, a permitted purchase of quarters and optional retirement savings require different checks and documents.

Read basic and supplementary contributions together
French payroll social insurance finances several risks, including old age, sickness and maternity, family benefits and occupational accidents. Private-sector employees also participate in unemployment insurance and compulsory supplementary retirement through Agirc-Arrco. Employer and employee contributions are distinct, and social levies such as CSG and CRDS should not be described as personal pension savings. Check your employment category and payslip before applying any standard contribution percentage. For a complete household cost comparison, identify your deductions, the employer-financed amounts and the pension schemes receiving them, while retaining a separate line for other social insurance.

Ask Assurance retraite to investigate missing or incorrect career periods using payslips, employer certificates or evidence from the relevant benefit agency. A corrected record may recognise existing rights without a buyback. A versement pour la retraite can cover qualifying study periods or incomplete contribution years, but age, pension-claim status, scheme affiliation and other requirements apply. The authority offers different purchase options, including an effect on the pension rate alone or on both rate and insurance duration. Purchased quarters do not automatically qualify someone for an early-retirement route. Obtain the official cost assessment and its stated effect before agreeing to payment.

Voluntary statutory insurance is not an unrestricted facility for every person with a career gap. For example, Assurance retraite describes a route for certain former artisans, traders, business owners and collaborating spouses, provided they satisfy the status rules and are not covered by another compulsory pension arrangement. That route can cover basic and complementary retirement together with disability and death protection. Application timing, the start date and payment obligations matter. A person moving abroad may need a different organisation or international arrangement. Ask the responsible fund to confirm the applicable route instead of transferring the rules for former self-employed workers to employees.
Assurance retraite: voluntary insurance for eligible self-employed peopleCheck the deduction category and the personal tax ceiling
Eligible retirement-quarter buyback payments can be deducted from taxable income under the official rules. Voluntary contributions to a PER retirement-savings plan use a separate deduction framework and a personalised annual ceiling, which can be checked on the tax assessment notice. Carry-forward provisions and the payment year matter; an old ceiling copied from a previous return may be unsuitable. A PER deposit does not add statutory pension quarters. Retain the fund's certificate, buyback decision and tax notice, then establish the actual income-tax saving. Do not treat the full contribution, or relief already reflected in payroll, as an additional tax refund.

- If a career entry is missing, submit the relevant wage, employment or benefit evidence to Assurance retraite and wait for its record decision.
- If a buyback or voluntary insurance route is confirmed, request an individual quote, coverage description and pension comparison before making a cost assumption.
- If comparing a PER contribution with a statutory payment, obtain separate tax certificates and use only the remaining personalised deduction allowance and confirmed tax saving.

What the cost calculator needs
Use payslips and the fund's payment receipts for your own statutory or buyback cost; use the PER certificate for any separate savings contribution. Confirm tax savings through the tax assessment and current personal allowance. Keep employer contributions and any verified public support separate. A career statement or Agirc-Arrco points statement supplies rights, not the personal cash payment.
It adds confirmed payment amounts and separates cash tax savings from funding paid by others. It does not calculate statutory liability from salary, buy contribution years, choose an insurance product or predict pension entitlement.
