United States pension and retirement planning guide

Separate the day you stop working from the day Social Security begins. Bring your personal benefit estimates and see how accessible savings could fund the years in between.

What can this calculator estimate?

It compares spending, manually entered pensions and accessible savings in USD, in today's purchasing power.

Use your own after-tax pension estimate. Read the full example

01

Use the estimate for the claiming age you mean

SSA provides benefit estimates based on your earnings record. Stopping work and starting benefits are different decisions. Request a projection for each claiming age and future earnings assumption you want to compare; moving a date in this calculator does not recalculate Social Security.

02

Give each retirement dollar one job

A pension payment belongs in an income field. Money used to buy that same pension must not also be counted as savings. For investment accounts, establish what is accessible and how withdrawals will be taxed before translating a statement balance into a spendable budget.

03

Make the bridge visible

List expenses that continue after your final paycheck, including health coverage and housing. Compare those with the pension income actually starting in each year. This model uses after-tax inputs; it does not calculate federal or state tax, required distributions, account access penalties or insurance costs.

Using the calculator

  1. Gather SSA estimates at the claiming dates you want to compare.
  2. Separate employer pension payments from accounts you intend to draw down.
  3. Enter a net monthly spending target and test the bridge before benefits begin.
  4. Use today's purchasing power for every amount. Compare more than one return, spending target and planning horizon.
