Denmark: verify ATP payments and voluntary contribution eligibility

ATP is a statutory supplementary pension with its own contribution record. The Danish labour-market contribution and private retirement saving serve different purposes.

Separate ATP from the wider tax-funded system

Denmark uses taxation to finance major public services and social protection. The labour-market contribution is a tax, not a payment into your personal ATP account. For eligible work, ATP contributions are shared between the employee and employer, while certain benefits also carry ATP contributions. The amount and obligation depend on the applicable employment or benefit category. Use the ATP entry on your payslip and your pension overview to identify what was actually credited. Avoid treating every payroll tax as a pension investment when comparing current household costs.

Investigate an incomplete ATP history promptly

Your ATP pension overview shows contributions and the expected pension. Compare it with payslips and periods receiving qualifying benefits. The official service highlights a limited period for correcting contribution errors, so contact ATP and the employer or paying authority when you discover a mismatch. Keep documents showing hours, employment dates and deductions. A lower pension can also reflect self-employment, work abroad or historical contribution arrangements rather than a reporting error. Ask ATP which explanation applies and whether a correction is still possible; do not assume an arbitrary lump sum can replace the missing period.

Check whether voluntary ATP is available to you

ATP is voluntary for certain groups, including qualifying self-employed people. The official ATP service lists the relevant categories and routes for registration. Membership and contribution conditions should be confirmed for your precise position rather than inferred from a previous job. If you change from employment to self-employment, ask whether continuation is available and request the payment schedule and resulting pension information. Additional private pension saving is a separate choice. Keep voluntary ATP, occupational pension and personal savings in distinct comparisons so that their contribution rules and benefit promises remain visible.

Use the tax treatment of the actual pension arrangement

Skattestyrelsen provides automatic relief for ATP contributions and different rules for other pension arrangements. Eligible instalment pensions and annuity arrangements can receive relief, but the contribution ceiling may combine employer-administered and personal payments. Age-related savings have different treatment and do not provide the same upfront deduction. Ask your bank or pension company for contributions already made and their allocation before adding money. Verify the information in TastSelv and obtain the tax effect for the current year. A deduction amount is not the amount of tax refunded, and early withdrawal can trigger a charge.

Which step should you take next?

  1. If ATP credits differ from your payslips, raise the error with ATP and the reporting payer promptly and retain the supporting records.
  2. If becoming self-employed, obtain a voluntary ATP eligibility decision and payment terms before assuming contributions can continue.
  3. If making another pension payment, ask the provider to combine employer and personal contributions when checking the applicable tax limit.

What the cost calculator needs

Use ATP's pension overview and confirmed payment schedule for the employee or voluntary contribution. Record the employer or public payer share separately. For other arrangements obtain a provider contribution statement and use TastSelv or an official Skattestyrelsen calculation for the actual tax saving; exclude unrelated labour-market tax from the pension payment.

It adds confirmed payment amounts and separates cash tax savings from funding paid by others. It does not calculate statutory liability from salary, buy contribution years, choose an insurance product or predict pension entitlement.
