Belgium pension contributions: career corrections and approved regularisation
Belgian contribution decisions depend on your employee, self-employed or public-service regime. A career correction, study-period regularisation and continued insurance solve different problems. Review the official career record and ask the competent institution which option applies before paying for an assumed pension improvement.

Separate employee deductions from self-employed assessments
ONSS explains that employee social contributions contain a worker share and an employer share. The employer remits the payments, but the employer's part is not your personal cash outlay. Social insurance protects more than retirement alone. Self-employed people instead work with a social-insurance fund and have a different assessment process; the official starting-business guidance distinguishes provisional contributions from later regularisation based on actual income. Obtain the relevant payroll statement or fund assessment, including any later adjustment. Do not compare a provisional business bill with an employee's pension deduction as though they provide identical cover.

The Federal Pensions Service directs you to mypension.be to inspect career information and report missing or incorrect periods. Ask about recognised non-working periods before assuming that every gap requires payment. Eligible study periods can be regularised through a specific application and official quotation. This generally concerns pension amount, rather than making retirement available earlier, and an increase is not guaranteed in every career situation. Request the effect on your individual record. The service is updating guidance following the 2026 pension reform, which makes a current personal confirmation especially useful.

For former employees, the Pensions Service describes recognition of certain continued sickness-invalidity insurance periods when the mutual insurance fund provides an attestation and the previous employment condition is met. Contact that fund about the qualifying arrangement. For self-employed people, the federal social-security overview distinguishes continued protection limited to pension from protection combining pension and health insurance. Your social-insurance fund must confirm eligibility, the duration, coverage and premium. Also ask whether a recognised sickness or other protected period preserves rights without the payment you are considering.
Federal Pensions Service — Continued insurance · Federal Public Service Social Security — Self-employed rightsUse the tax certificate for the actual personal payment
For an approved study-period regularisation that you pay yourself, the Pensions Service provides a tax certificate and identifies the payment as a deductible personal social-security contribution. Follow the appropriate tax-return instructions and retain the certificate. The amount deductible is not the same as the tax saved. Other continued-insurance or supplementary-pension payments require their own confirmation; the study-purchase rule should not be applied automatically. Reconcile any contribution already reflected in taxable payroll income and compare only the additional tax reduction officially supported for the proposed payment.

- If mypension.be is incomplete, request correction and recognition of applicable protected periods before purchasing anything.
- If requesting a study buyback, obtain the approved cost and the confirmed individual pension effect under the applicable rules.
- If leaving self-employment or employment, ask the competent fund which continued-insurance coverage is available and how the personal premium is taxed.

What the cost calculator needs
Use the Federal Pensions Service's approved regularisation quote or the social-insurance/mutual fund's coverage decision for the personal cost. Use the tax certificate and an official tax assessment or calculation for confirmed tax savings. Keep employer-funded contributions and any public funding separate, and obtain a current pension-effect confirmation where reform changes may affect the result.
It adds confirmed payment amounts and separates cash tax savings from funding paid by others. It does not calculate statutory liability from salary, buy contribution years, choose an insurance product or predict pension entitlement.
