Thailand social security contributions and voluntary pension options
Thailand's Social Security sections serve different groups and offer different protection. A former employee's continuation payment and an informal worker's voluntary payment are not interchangeable pension purchases. Confirm your registered section and contribution history with the Social Security Office before comparing costs.

Identify the section behind a payroll deduction
Section 33 covers eligible employees and combines old-age protection with other branches, including sickness, maternity, disability, death, child support and unemployment. Contributions and benefits follow the insured category and applicable wage basis. Check the contribution month and employer registration rather than copying a historic maximum deduction. The August 2026 government announcement about bringing previously excluded occupations into Section 33 describes draft legislation and a commencement process. It does not, by itself, prove that a particular newly listed worker is already covered. Ask the Social Security Office to confirm the effective rules and inspect the employer's reporting against your payslip.

If a payroll deduction is absent from your insurance record, retain payslips and employment evidence and ask the employer and Social Security Office to reconcile the affected months. For Section 39, repeated missed contributions can terminate insured status; the official guidance provides an appeal route with evidence and a time limit. Request the formal status decision immediately. Section 40 guidance distinguishes resuming payments from paying for past unprotected months. A person who stops paying should not assume that restarting creates continuous benefit entitlement. Obtain confirmation of the benefit's qualifying contribution window before treating any gap as repaired.

A former Section 33 member may apply for Section 39 continuation only after meeting the previous-contribution condition and the application deadline following employment. Use the Social Security Office's e-Service or office and verify acceptance. Eligible informal or independent workers instead use Section 40 options, whose protection differs; old-age provision is not included in every option. Section 40 cash compensation for illness is also different from paying medical treatment costs under Section 39. Confirm the health scheme that will cover treatment, the selected option's current old-age benefit and the effect of missing payments. Extra saving does not automatically create Section 33 service.

The Revenue Department explains that qualifying social-security contributions are deducted on an actual-paid basis within the amount allowed by social-security law, supported by payment evidence. Its older FAQ examples must not be used as a 2026 contribution ceiling. Reconcile employer certificates and Social Security Office receipts, especially after changing section during the year or receiving a refund. Ask Revenue to confirm the treatment of your exact contribution category and any separate retirement-saving product. A deduction reduces the tax base; its cash value depends on your taxable income and relief already claimed. Government or employer funding is not an additional personal tax payment.

- If employment ended, confirm Section 39 eligibility and the application deadline before the continuation window closes.
- If a contribution is missing, ask the Social Security Office whether the issue is employer reporting, Section 39 termination or a Section 40 benefit gap, and obtain the correct remedy.
- If considering Section 40, verify the selected option's old-age protection, separate healthcare coverage and receipt-based tax treatment before comparing its cost.

What the cost calculator needs
Take personal amounts from payslips reconciled to the Social Security Office contribution history and official receipts for Sections 39 or 40. Obtain the actual tax reduction from the Revenue Department assessment or a confirmed tax return calculation, using the current year's permitted deduction. Record employer and government contributions separately when the authority confirms them. The comparison does not decide section eligibility, restore lapsed cover or calculate pension service from a payment alone.
It adds confirmed payment amounts and separates cash tax savings from funding paid by others. It does not calculate statutory liability from salary, buy contribution years, choose an insurance product or predict pension entitlement.
