Example: a gap before pension payments
Imagine stopping work at 65 and spending NOK 30,000 a month, with no pension until 67. At zero return and zero inflation, the two-year bridge needs NOK 720,000. If confirmed pensions then total NOK 22,000 net a month, savings cover NOK 8,000 a month thereafter. These are invented amounts and dates, not NAV rates or AFP eligibility rules.

Common questions
Can I enter NAV pension and AFP together?
Only use a combination your scheme permits. For the older public-sector AFP arrangement, enter non-overlapping periods with NAV retirement pension. Other AFP arrangements have different conditions. The fields accept your scenario without validating scheme rules.
Will a later retirement age increase my pension here?
No. Get a new NAV and provider forecast for the later date and update the amount yourself. This tool changes the savings period and payment timing, but it does not calculate pension accrual or a deferral increase.
Does this calculate Norwegian pension tax?
No. Enter income after tax and a savings return after taxes and fees. Do not copy a gross forecast into a net field. Tax deductions, coordination and future changes are outside the model.
Methodology · 1.0
Methodology
One consistent money basis
All inputs and results use today's purchasing power. Enter net pension payments and spending after tax. The net return is nominal, after investment taxes and fees. Monthly real growth factor = ((1 + net return / 100) / (1 + inflation / 100))^(1/12). Savings contributions remain constant in real terms and arrive at month-end until retirement.
How the income gap is funded
From retirement, the monthly gap is max(0, spending − active pension payments). Savings grow first, then a month-end withdrawal funds the gap up to the available balance. Excess pension income is not reinvested. The capital needed at retirement is the sum of these future gaps discounted at the monthly real return; no future pension is borrowed against.
What the estimate leaves out
Amounts stay constant in real terms: the model assumes payments keep pace with inflation, which your actual pension may not do. Ages use whole years; no calendar dates, pension accrual, changing taxes, benefit offsets, future lump sums, market volatility or inheritance target are modelled. Income before your entered retirement age is excluded. Changing a start age does not recalculate the payment amount. Only combine streams that share the same dates.
