What can this calculator estimate?

It compares spending, manually entered pensions and accessible savings in NZD, in today's purchasing power.

Use your own after-tax pension estimate. Read the full example

01

Check NZ Super using your own residence history

Work and Income explains NZ Super eligibility, residence requirements and interactions with overseas pensions. Your circumstances matter; a standard rate is not a personal entitlement. Use the appropriate net amount, considering the tax code and the scenario you are planning.

02

Treat KiwiSaver as capital when drawing it down

Sorted's retirement tools illustrate turning invested savings into an income stream. If you model an accessible KiwiSaver balance as capital here, do not enter your planned withdrawals again as pension income. The calculator itself generates withdrawals from the savings balance.

03

Keep other income schedules visible

A pension or annuity can start later or finish earlier than NZ Super. Enter a separate schedule where needed. Account eligibility, changing tax codes, overseas pension adjustments, market volatility and means-tested support are not automatically calculated.

Using the calculator

  1. Confirm NZ Super eligibility and the applicable net payment with Work and Income.
  2. Include KiwiSaver only when it is available for the withdrawals you plan.
  3. Give other recurring income its own dates and compare the early-retirement bridge.
  4. Use today's purchasing power for every amount. Compare more than one return, spending target and planning horizon.
