Indonesia BPJS contributions, record gaps and self-employed saving
Indonesian retirement planning needs separate records for Jaminan Hari Tua (JHT) and Jaminan Pensiun (JP). A JHT balance is not the same thing as entitlement to a recurring JP pension. BPJS Ketenagakerjaan employment protection and BPJS Kesehatan health coverage also have different accounts, payment duties and benefit conditions.

Read the payroll by programme and participant category
For wage earners, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan lists JHT, work-injury protection (JKK), death protection (JKM), JP and conditional unemployment protection (JKP). JHT and JP have employee and employer components; the wage basis and limits are programme-specific. Employers report membership, wages and contributions. Health insurance under JKN must be checked separately. Ask payroll for your registered category, reported wage, each personal deduction and each employer or government-funded amount. Public-service, military, migrant and other special arrangements need their own confirmation. Do not apply a private wage-earner contribution table to every worker.

Use the official JMO application to compare membership details with payslips and employment dates. BPJS describes JMO as a channel for reporting discrepancies in participant status, wage amounts and workforce reporting. An omitted employer payment or understated wage should be investigated with BPJS and the employer using supporting evidence. Request the accepted correction, payment allocation and revised record before assuming pension service has increased. The sources reviewed do not establish an unrestricted option to purchase past JP years. JKN arrears and its instalment programme concern health coverage and must not be presented as pension buyback.

Non-wage workers can use the Bukan Penerima Upah (BPU) registration route, whose published programmes are JKK, JKM and JHT. Do not assume that BPU contributions also enroll you in JP. Confirm your occupation, income band, selected programmes and effective coverage date before paying through an authorized channel. The current BPU page includes time-limited contribution reductions in 2026, with different periods for transport and other sectors. Obtain the amount actually applicable to your payment month instead of copying a historic example. Saving through JHT does not automatically replace every benefit lost after leaving insured employment.
BPJS Ketenagakerjaan: BPU programmes and current temporary reductionsUse the permitted employee deduction and final tax calculation
The tax authority's PMK 168 guidance allows qualifying salary-related pension and old-age contributions paid by employees through employers to specified authorized institutions to reduce the relevant annual employment-income base. JHT and JP are included in official withholding guidance. A lower taxable base is not a refund equal to the contribution. Monthly withholding and the final tax-period reconciliation can differ. Keep the employer's annual withholding certificate and contribution receipts, and ask the tax authority how a personal BPU or other voluntary payment is treated. Do not extend an employee payroll deduction automatically to self-employed payments or health premiums.

- If you receive a salary, reconcile JHT, JP and health contributions separately against JMO, payroll and the health account.
- If a wage or contribution period is missing, obtain BPJS's correction decision before entering any proposed back payment.
- If you are self-employed, request the current BPU programme quotation and separate JHT saving from insurance charges; confirm any tax deduction independently.

What the cost calculator needs
Take personal JHT/JP amounts from JMO or BPJS statements and payslips, and BPU costs from the official billing code and paid receipts. Use the employer's annual withholding certificate and tax-authority-confirmed final calculation for actual tax savings. Show employer shares, government support and temporary reductions separately; a JHT account balance is not an annual personal contribution.
It adds confirmed payment amounts and separates cash tax savings from funding paid by others. It does not calculate statutory liability from salary, buy contribution years, choose an insurance product or predict pension entitlement.
