India EPF and NPS contributions: correct records before comparing extra savings
India does not have one universal pension contribution for every worker. EPFO schemes, ESI, government employment arrangements and voluntary NPS serve different groups. Start with the scheme shown on the employment record and the period concerned, particularly while payroll rules and income-tax legislation are changing.

Identify coverage and the current payroll basis
For covered employment, EPFO administers provident-fund saving, Employees' Pension Scheme protection and deposit-linked insurance. ESI separately provides medical and cash benefits for covered workers. Obtain the employee and employer components, pension allocation, insurable wages and coverage status from payroll. A September 2026 Cabinet announcement approved an EPFO wage-ceiling increase, but the announcement alone does not establish the commencement date for an individual's payroll. Ask EPFO or the employer for the operative notification and effective month. Do not apply a general private-sector calculation to a government-service pension arrangement.

Reconcile the UAN-linked passbook, service history, payslips and employer remittance information. Missing credits need employer correction and, if unresolved, an EPFiGMS grievance with the relevant documents and account identifiers. EPFO can assess the applicable obligation; a personal investment in NPS cannot replace an employer's EPF liability or create EPS service. Special enrolment campaigns have defined dates, eligible periods and employer procedures. For example, the official 2026 Mysuru campaign notice describes conditional relief for previously unenrolled employees. It is not evidence that any individual can buy arbitrary past years anywhere in India.

An EPF member may use the permitted voluntary provident-fund contribution route through payroll; a higher employee contribution does not automatically require the employer to match the increase. For a separate pension account, PFRDA's All Citizen NPS model permits eligible Indian citizens, including qualifying non-residents and OCI applicants, to enrol subject to age and identity requirements. Use a registered Point of Presence or official NPS entry point. Check the account tier, contribution requirements, investment choice and withdrawal conditions. Extra NPS deposits build the NPS account, without purchasing missing EPFO membership.

Personal provident-fund and NPS deductions and employer NPS deductions have different conditions and caps. Under the default tax regime, an employer NPS deduction can remain available when the usual personal investment deductions are unavailable. Do not relabel your own deposit as an employer contribution. The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies to tax years beginning from 1 April 2026, while earlier income and related assessments remain under the prior law. Confirm the relevant provisions, unused deduction capacity and actual tax reduction through Income Tax Department guidance and the applicable return before making a tax-driven contribution.

- If payroll or EPFO records disagree, collect the UAN passbook, service dates and payslips and request employer correction or use EPFiGMS.
- If considering voluntary EPF or NPS, establish current membership and the exact contribution route; ask EPFO for any retrospective or campaign entitlement rather than assuming a buyback.
- If comparing tax costs, identify the income year and elected regime, distinguish personal from employer NPS payments, and obtain the confirmed tax saving.

What the cost calculator needs
Use UAN/EPFO passbook entries and payslips for personal EPF cash, and NPS CRA transaction statements for personal NPS deposits. Obtain ESI deductions separately if included. Use the Income Tax Department's applicable assessment or confirmed computation for the tax saving. Enter employer EPF/EPS/NPS amounts and any verified government support separately, avoiding double counting of an employer amount already allocated between EPF and EPS.
It adds confirmed payment amounts and separates cash tax savings from funding paid by others. It does not calculate statutory liability from salary, buy contribution years, choose an insurance product or predict pension entitlement.
